Toad living in my Greenhouse
« on: June 20, 2007, 15:14:18 »
Hello All,

I have a Toad ( Big Ine ) living in my greenhouse. He does not appear to be doing any damage.  Can anyone tell me, should I leave him there and if so what should he be fed.

Thanks.

Before you criticise a man, walk a mile in his shoes. Then, when you do criticise him, you are a mile away. And you have his shoes. !!!

In my experience Toads are the amphibious equivalent of cats.  They do what they want, when and where they want, so if he's moved in with you, he's already got what he wants.

He won't do any damage, apart from to caterpillars & slugs, so I'd suggest just saying Hi & giving him a bit of personal space whilst congratulating yourself on your good luck.

Cheers
is it in the sale?

I'd give it space and make sure it doesn't get locked in the shed  8)

Thank you for these replies,

I shall look after it.  What does a Toad eat ?

I may give it treats,

And what real benefit will I get in the greenhouse.  ( does it eat slugs )

I had one in the greenhouse - though it could have beena frog.  I often found him little worms and he really liked them.  The whole of his little body came alive when he swallowed one.

A friend of mine had a big one that lived the the gas meter cupboard inside her house.  Sometimes she took him out for a chat and gently stroked his head!!

We, too, have one in the 'big' 'house each year.

Haven't a clue as to how he gets in - there's a 12" drop from door or 'ground floor' vents.

But yes - a great slugger!

They climb extremely well, unlikely as that may seem.
