my courgettes are rotting from the flower end and going very soft. any ideas as to why?

Probably because they weren't pollinated. This often happens early in the season. The next few courgettes will probably be fine.

Yep, that's exactly it. You can always hand polinate if you have some male flowers - I tend to plant my courgettes amongst borage - the bees can't get enough of them :)
