Has anyone grown Welsh onions?
« on: May 22, 2007, 12:59:08 »
I was reading about them in Kitchen Garden and was wondering whether they're worth the effort? They're not at all leeky are they? We're not keen on leeks! I was quite interested to see that they look quite hardy so you can harvest late in the season. BTW, hello to everyone, this is my first post here and I've been reading the other posts with interest, it's nice to see some other lottie obsessives!

Not leeky ,and if you grow the red one it has a stronger flavour.

Hello muddynose, nice to see you! :)

Welsh Onion is quite mild, much milder than normal spring onion in my opinion although I guess the flavour can be different when grown in a different environment.
I have the red ones grown from seeds and they have been no trouble at all. Mine stayed green and was very useful during winter. I'd say it's a good addition to any kitchen garden. :)

I was given some this time last year and they looked good all through the winter - I've been advised to use them as spring onions.

Yes, they are worth growing. They're an absolute staple in our garden.

Many decades ago my in-laws retired and moved from London to Lacock in Wiltshire. Down the hill from them was a chap who sold surplus veg; we went in one day for some tomatoes and came out with a clump of welsh onions as well. They went all round our garden, and then to the allotment. Loads of plot-holders have had off-sets from them. And now they're coming back to us: ours have been gradually dying, but we're being replenished by our friends. (Isn't that what gardening's all about?)

On a practical note, pick the stems as you would chives, or dig up a clump and use them as spring onions. I couldn't live without them.

I didnt know people dug them up and used them as spring onions, I've had a clump for a few years and I use them like chives, but they're not as sweet as chives - they do taste more like spring onions.

YEP... I use them as spring onions, they are just a little milder.
When pulling up a clump , i just take one off and put it back in for it to clump again.

mine have gone all limp and poorly looking. I've been digging in a bit of compost and watering plenty in the hope of improving them because the soil is very fine and dry.

they survived the hellish summer they had last year so why are they limp and yellowing in May?
