Why are my cabbage seedlings dying
« on: May 08, 2007, 07:17:50 »
I lost my first batch of cabbages due to damping off and no shading in greenhouse.
Got shading now up in greenhouse, bought cheshunt compound to stop damping off occurring and also disinfected greenhouse with jayes fluid. ::)
Second batch of cabbages are about 1-1.5" tall and dying.
Leaves have a very slight yellowy colour to them, then starts curling up and plant die.   Pricked out some but still the same result.
Greenhouse Temp. not dropping below 12 Deg. C at night, compost is moist, greenhouse opened up during day. All other plants (Toms, Beans, Sprouts, Cucumbers, Cauliflowers, Cardoons, Leeks and courgette) are all doing well.
Has anyone got any advise PLEASE. :o
Cheers

We are having the same problem with our cabbages
pricked them out into 2inch cells looked good now they are dying off. :'(
Now we have planted 2 seeds to a cell to see how they do without
having to transplant them twice.
will let you know how they do ::)

Hi FH, I think the problem you are having  with your brasicas is the temperature being too high and maybe  overwatering  too..
They become too soft in these conditions .. Your being too kind to them  :)
Unlike peppers ,tomatoes etc brassicas prefer and grow better in lower temps ..
If your pricking brasicas out bury  most of the   stem up to the leaves that way they will make a better root structure,
Try cutting back on the watering and putting them somewhere cooler even outside will do if they are covered with a bit of chicken wire or netting  Which is clear of the leaves and keeps the birds etc off them and  stand em on something away from the slugs ...
Just keep an eye out for frost otherwise they should be OK ..
See what others think ..cheers Jim

Thanks GM. I'll make up some mini frames with the wood and 12mm mesh I have left over from my main frames and stick them outside, may stick cauliflower and sprouts out with them if they start looking ill.
Thanks again

Hmmm, this is my first year of brassicas too and I have them on the dining room window sill.  I will pop them outside now, thanks for that!  :) :) :-[

If germinating seeds indoors a general rule is;

any plants that can be sown directly in the ground (see instructions on packet) should be put outdoors in a frost free sheltered well lit position after pricking out.

When you think about it! had you sown them insitu they would have been outdoors automatically after germination.

Does that make sense ???
