when top harvest potatoes?
« on: May 05, 2007, 10:16:19 »
Hi,

This is my first year at veg growing and wondering when you harvest potatoes? I have earthed up twice and the plants are pretty tall. Should they flower first?

thanks.

it depends on the potato type first earlies etc. and when you planted them.
but yes usually they are ready when they flower.

Earlies, wait until the flowers have opened, or the buds dropped.

Maincrops, once the foliage has turned brown, and the stems withered, cut of the stems and remove them. 10 or so days later dig the potatoes, let the tubers dry for several hours, before storing them.
Grow your own and enjoy the fruits of your labours,
Regards Alan.

Have a reef around in the soil and check them for yourself, if you put them  in pots early you may have some new spuds, check Chris's posting, but if they are in the ground I doubt if you will get any before June.  ;D ;D ;D
MAY THE CORN BE WITH YOU.
