tomatoes again sorry!
« on: May 24, 2004, 20:25:12 »
hi, i've tried searching for the old thread with the great tomato website on but i can't find it.

i 'rescued' some sad looking tomato plants from b & q yesterday, potted them on into a nice big pot full of grobag compost and watered them well. they have been in a plastic growhouse today but they aren't very happy. my homegrown plants are fine and they only went in yesterday as well so i don't think its the growhouse taht is the problem

a lot of the leaves have turned white on the new toms, not like mildew or any coating of anything, just the actual leaves. do you think i've shocked them by taking care of them and they've overdosed on food and water (had exactly the same compost and watering as the home grown ones) as they showed no problems like this in the garden centre or is it something else?

thanks in advance.

This reminds of something John (I think) wrote about, scorching. Maybe there was full sun in your growhouse and they are not used to it, big shock.
With a bit of luck, the new leaves will not have this problem and the plant will grow over it. I would remove all the leaves, save the top few and plant it as deep as possible. Those white leaves are useless anyway and the stem will grow nice new roots.
Don't you just love a challenge?

i don't think its scorching as the leaves aren't dry and crumbly as described in the scorching discussion. will try removing the leaves, thanks ina.

I know its not about toms but my courgette plants have had some of their leaves turn a pale yellow and are crumbly - is the scorching effect you mentioned.

Les

oh and whilst we are talking about toms, we have 6 tom plants which we recently transplanted into bigger pots (9") before we put them into the grow bags.

We took off some of the lower leaves and planted them deeper (as we have seen this mentioned on other tom threads).

The plants look very healthy indeed but they just dont seem to be growing at the moment we transplanted them about 3 weeks ago. Could they just be getting used to their new environment?

I don't know, if anyone knows it would put me at rest?

You might find they are concentrating on building good roots! - I'm not an expert so it is just a guess.

Most of my tomatoes have been on the lottie for a week now (covered in fleece for about five days), and haven't had a growth spurt yet. I too planted them deeper to get them making more roots. They are looking healthy, so I'm not panicing yet - give them time ;)

Were there strong roots trying to get out of the pot? If not, you can't expect them to suddenly do better than they've done so far & you may have to use some of that stuff out of the bottle labelled 'Patience'!
Don't give them water for a week after the first watering. = Tim

The root system was terrific. So patience it is!

Tim by the way I have been gently watering them every other day or so since they were re potted should I give them a break from the water still like you suggested?

Hi legless, what ina said about scorching is true.I grow different types of tomatoes for several years now.I start them on the windowsill and they ended outside. This year i had a big scorching problem,i had put all my toms ,on a clouded day outside, but then the next day it was really sunny and hot.I was on my work so couldnot reacted properly. When i came home some of the toms were sunburnt, those leaves turned white. Now the good news they grow over it,my toms are now looking healthy and the most are flowering.

Les - don't know, but wouldn't think so.

Assume they'll be going into whole grow bags? Because they will be pretty big by the time they have re-rooted in 9" pots?? Assuming they have shelter, I would have put them straight into the bags.

Even at this late stage, I would be very tempted to transfer at least one to its final position - as a control - subject to the 'expert' view. = Tim

Hahaha.
I was alone when I discovered it and found myself talking out loud:

Waauw, look at that? Hehehe, a little tomato, the first one. Great! Are there anymore? Come on, make more you guys.

Of course all in Dutch, my plants don't understand English.....or do they? The seeds came from England? Multi cultural tomatoes.
