Feeding potatoes with tomato feed?
« on: April 21, 2007, 09:21:18 »
Would this be possible?

Since they are from the same family could you feed potatoes with liquid tomato feed?

Worried about the lack of nutrients in some of the pot bound plants.

It can only help. Or get a comfrey pipe going and make your own
Our biggest mistake with spuds was to let them dry out in a very dry year.
Always had nice spuds from the container ones.

Personally I think it is a bit of a waste.

True tomato & potato are of the same family but the end result we want is different.

That is; with the tomato it is the fruit we require and subsequently the seed whereas with the potato we want the tuber not the fruit, the fruit is poisonous.

A high potash feed e.g. tomato feed is to ripen the fruit whereas the tuber we want from the potato is basically a root formation and is more likely to need a phosphate feed if any.

As I say I think it is a waste of time and in my opinion if a good general fertiliser is applied at planting out time this should be sufficient to produce a good crop of tubers!

OK thanks for that, I thought the tomato feed generally feed the whole plant as a whole and didn`t know it was to ripen the fruit.

I will stop her wasting it on the spuds then....

Sorry Chris G for my mis-information......always learning!
