i have heard and read people rave about seaweed extract as a foliant feed. i have some seaweed meal so could i make a foliant feed out of that and if so how often do you feed with it

Probably - but I would hesitate to use an unknown mix on my precious things. Better for its stated purpose?

(2tbs/1.5gal/every 2-4 weeks).

Sorry to hijack the thread as it is slightly off topic - but I collected a whole lot of seaweed and placed it in a bucket with some water. It has been a couple of weeks now and it is really smelling to high heaven. Do I now just siphon off the smelly contents and then dilute 1 - 10 or has this gone off and should I turf the lot and start again.

I can get fresh seaweed quite easily and also want to use is as a mulch for my newly planted 1 year old crowns. Is this a good idea??

Hallo Jitterbug, I also live close to seaside and use seaweed whenever I can ..I just carefully lay it around my plants ,it dries crispy quite quickly and crumbles of it,s own accord,the salt kills off the slugs ,the sand improves the soil and the untold and yet undiscovered minerals in it boost the plants and veggies like no other stuff I,ve ever used ! Oh!....we do like to be beside the seaside .....oh! we do like to be beside the sea....la la la

I used to use sea gold as a fertilizer for my leeks but when i tried to get some this year i was informed that all seaweed fertilizers are no longer produced due to the amount being collected is not good for the environment. I fancy its a EU ruling

I have heard of some stuff called Kelpak, its ment to be the best you can get.

Anyone know where you can get it?

We dig fresh seaweed into our potato beds every year and the soil has improved considerably.

Davy, calcified seaweed is the stuff not being produced locally (Cornwall) as to much was being taken. I've been using liquid seaweed for 3years now, plenty available all over. Maxicrop from most garden centers, i get mine from Shropshire seaweed. Its meant to be the strongest but i think they are all much the same. You will find its not sold as a fertilizer anymore but a "growth enhancer" or "stimulator" whatever its brilliant when used with other fertilizers organic or not. It seems to enable the plants to take up available food better.
Got some guys from work using it last year, had to buy a bulk container of 20 litres this year for us to share as so many people wanted some.

Davejg That post was way back in 2007, ihave always been able to get Maxicrop but it was the pelleted stuff i needed which was slow release. So i started using another form called Calcified Plus but now i can once again get the calcified seaweed in pelleted form.

Ive contacted Omex and they only sell it to farmers and in bulk.
Ive just found some Kelpak on Ebay, in 1 litre bottles. it says 2ml per litre,, that stuff will go a long way.

Also found the Shropshire seaweed extract on ebay

I still swear by Seasol, brilliant stuff. Unfortunately my local garden centre has stopped stocking it as they have apparently changed their minimum order requirements, so I ended up finding a UK stockist online and investing in a 4l bottle....should last a while! Link below if interested. You can also get it on the Sarah Raven site I believe, but at premium prices of course.... ;D
