HELP i have a dilemma!
« on: April 06, 2007, 21:00:43 »
Hello all
Please could you help me decide on what to do! ??? I have planted up my 2nd earlies (Kestral) and still have enough to do another row! now if i do..that means that i will only have ONE row of main crop (valor) instead of the 2 that i planned! (My row is 7 meters so 18 tubers to plant)
Is it better to have more 2nd earlies than main crop or vica versa ??? i could do half a row of each i suppose....please help im going mad ::)

Thanks x

If you are only doing 4 rows and so are not aiming for self sufficiency I'd stick in more of the earlies... can you not find/make room for the others or get them into tubs/pots/dustbins???

Oh golly! I'm agreeing with Dad in that the spares can be planted in big tubs/dustbins/whatever BUT in your position I'd put the maincrop in the earth & do the tub/sack business with the Kestrels... ::)

When you first look at your allotment, you can never imagine running out of space!

That is so true Allabout, thats how I ended up with three allotments and still running out of space  :-\
Just one more polytunnel, just one more chicken coop.
Just one more allotment.

Been there done that as they say!

Stick to your original plan and next year plan on six potatoes to the pound and work from there.

This also works ot roughly at five -six foot row per pound.

Take your pick.

I've planted some of my earlies in bags to save space in the beds.

My plot is 10m x 50 m.... i am already running out of space and my maincrops, roots and squash/courgettes etc isnt in yet... Lucky i can take over the plot next door or i would be only eating onions beans and potatos this year LOL

I would say put your main crop in ground and kestrels in sacks/tubs.

My best carrots grow in an old cold frame... I broke the light so filled it with home made compost...

hi veggielover,
there are quite a few new people on our allotments who have taken on very overgrown/neglected  plots. one regular plotholder has offered to clear a patch and plant his own potatoes on their plots. one person gets his pots planted, the others going to have a clear patch dug and cleared for next year.
