The only way is netting or covering the area with bramble cuttings

If I wanted to keep away the birds, I'd encourage the cat. In fact the best way to keep birds and cats out of your garden is to get a pet cat. They always cr@p next door & will see off any opposition. And chase birds.

Problem solved!

Netting! Some birds find cds off putting but I've never had any luck with them. The girls want to make a scarecrow, but think he'll just be someone for me to natter to while i'm down there. He's going to look like Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the carribean according to my eldest so he might scare them away, or i might leave the OH for him.  ;D
Don't throw paper away. There is no away.

Netting AND cats.

I use nets extensively over my raised beds, but we also have a load of feral cats in our allotment, so the problem is not so much birds as cats digging up my seed beds and using them as high class latrines.

So the nets are double function. All the beds with raised bits on the raised bit are either netting or polythene. See photo on:-
