2008 Competition Ideas
« on: March 23, 2007, 18:29:32 »
Hi all, have just been thinking about what I could do as my bit for the website, and people who use it. I would just like some feedback on the following idea;

I grow a giant pumpkin this year
If I have enough seeds the competition commences
Entrants must send a random packet of seeds to me - this will all go towards the prize
*A few people will need to send me a pound coin with their random seeds to cover prize postage
In return, they will receive five of the seeds from the pumpkin I grew
They grow their giant from one of those seeds
The person with the biggest/heaviest wins
The winner receives all the packets of seeds sent to me

But Pete, how could this work. There are so amny questions.

What would the prize be?

Would it be all the seeds you where sent?  If not what percentage.

How many is 'a few' people to send money, how much postage would it be.

What if your seeds don't germinate after people have sent their money and their seeds?

Why would someone send a packet of seeds, say £1.50 + another £1 to get back 5 seeds that might germinate or not. And they would have to wait months to win something they had paid for  in the first place.

Sorry but I still don't understand.

Do you mean instead of the biggest/heaviest pumpkin competion we have organised for us which is running already ???

I'm all for supporting and joining in a new competion but not duplicating a existing one ,or have i misunderstood ?

Jeannine, the prize would be ALL of the seeds people have sent me to join in the competition. I'm not sure how many a few is - it would all depend upon how many people take part (meaning the size of the prize as well). I would do a germination test to see what percentag germinate, and if the results were good, say 70% or over, I would send 5 seeds. If they weren't (70% or under) I would send 10 seeds. I do get your point though...I wouldn't worry about it though - it's a bit of a rubbish idea nyways lol!

Rosebud I agree and anyway it is a big  responsibility , I would be too scared that it all went pear shaped ,as things tend to,I think Pete might get into trouble with his Mum and Dad. I think you are better not with this one Pete..XX Jeannine

First: Grow the biggest pumpkin ever.
Second: Make your own rules.

potterfanpete, I think it's nice that you're thinking about contributing towards the forum like this :) however I share similar concerns as to that which has already been expressed, particularly the asking for money. Also, if new members join the forum later in the year, for example around July, they would be excluded from joining in because the pumpkins they'll be growing won't be from seeds supplied by you.

You know Pete, Leonnie is right, but what would be really nice is to see some of your photos,we all try to put a few on and eveyone seems to enjoy them. I think that would be an excellent way to contribute to the site.  You are making yourself a personal garden and sharing the greenhouse wth your Dad to see who makes it best. How are you doing with that, who's winning?  I shall look forward to seening the pictures XX Jeannine

I'm just about to post some of my pics on the gallery board - I took them 10 mins ago, and it's starting to get dark, so they're not brilliant, but it's a start :)
