anything else I could plant over the next few weeks?
« on: March 04, 2007, 16:03:17 »
I have raspberry canes to go in this week. I am also going to germinate broad beans today in pots and then plant them under a mini polytunnel when they come up. The plan is also get some some shallots in soon. What will you be planting? I am in Manchester and it's still quite cool and rainy here.

I want to get my shallots in too but it is too wet to walk on the plot. Not sure how late I can leave it and still get a decent crop - do you know?

No idea but I am sure one of the resident experts will! Good question though. How late for shallots and also garlic?

One of my books has a "last chance" section for each month and it gives May as the last chance for onions for autumn. I haven't planted onions or shallots yet.

My spring-sown onion sets don't normally go in till end of March, beginning of April (I'm NW London), although the autumn ones (& the garlic) were in end of October. Plenty in modules under glass & ready to go: beetroot, peas, lettuce. But if your plot's anything like mine, you might like to think about rice.......

haha - yes, rice could be an idea Trevor. I think I will concentrate on getting some beetroot and parsnips on the go ready to put out when it warms up. hopefully by next weekend it may be dry enough to put the onions in. I may still try the garlic. I am trying to find elephant garlic as I read it was suitable for spring planting. I will get that in ASAP and fingers crossed!

Sparkly I brought my elephant garlic in Wyevale garden centre last week I was planning on planting this weekend but haven't got to the allotment as too wet.

but you can grow parsnips in loo rolls or roottrainers as long as you plant before taproot grows too long
