Topic: Leeks - What now?

I have started some leek seeds off in a heated propagator. They are now ready to be potted on. I have read that they should be planted in their final position when they are pencil sized, however, as I will be growing these in containers, does this still apply? Do I pot them on and then transfer them into the container when they are pencil sized? If so, what do I pot them on into i.e. what sized plantpot? Do I keep them indoors until they are pencil sized or put them in the cold greenhouse?

MrsKP, I know you grew leeks in containers last year, how did you grow yours? Or anyone else who can help, I'd be grateful.

I start mine off in the gh in 5in pots,sow them thinly so they are not over crowded ,then put them outside still in the pots till they are ready to be put in there final position. :)

Leeks do NOT have to be pencil thick - they can happily be as slim as 1/8".

And what length approximately do they need to be when transplanting to final growing  place please?
And how deep to dibber the hole for them?
Do you need to trim the roots and leaves at all?

They can go out as soon as you can handle them. If really necessary. And timely.

If small, there is no need to trim.

Even though tiny, I still do a 10" dib. But don't fill it in!

Resumably then tim, it doesn't matter if the tip of the leek seedling is below the soil level?

I know that you just fill the hole with water after insertion of the seedling.
