GOAT ATTACK ....HELP !
« on: March 04, 2007, 09:26:15 »
HELP  ME SOMEBODY !  !   What can I plant along a boundary fence that my neighbours goats wont eat ?   >:(    There is a four foot high pigwire fence, kind of patchworked together with pieces of chicken wire ,   I cant afford more chicken wire and the goats push their heads through the tiniest of gaps .       Rohaise

I would plant Helichrysum italicum, well known as the curry plant.
This would then provide you with curried goat.
Don't worry about tomorrow, or yesterday, just think about today.

It is up to your neighbours to keep their livestock in, not yours to keep out. If you are friends just remind them of the regulations without falling out over it. If you are not friends write them a letter, then if nothing is done, report them.

I have kept goats in the past and a 4 foot fence will not keep out a detemined goat. Fantastic source of manure though.

Billies will eat anything; nannies are a bit more fussy. Most people have the odd billy though. Sort something out with the neighbour, since it's their responsibility not yours.

Ace is right!

Goats  should be adequately fenced (if loose) or chained.
Send a bill for the damage, it soon concentrates their mind. The bill should include cost of materials and labour (at a good remunerative rate) and loss of produce.

My sister used to keep hers on long tethers; they were quite happy, and it kept them under control. You could suggest doing something similar with these.

can your neighbour not get a electric fence, it soon stops them once they learn respect for it they wont go near it!

Being invaded by a goat would drive me crackers, its bad enough trying to keep wood pigeons and other predators away. And the goat has a "not nice" owner, what a terrible combination. ???

Thankyou BarnOwl   , I have collected lots of tree and bush seeds and sown them last Autumn ,in pots ,with a view to plant a native species hedge all along th boundary...I think there were some Pyracantus seeds in amongst them ....I was a very patient person as you can see.....But  NOW I am patient no more ....and I will be looking into where I can buy some of these prickly things   ....got to be cheap though      :-\     Rohaise

good luck hun, as far as i am aware (have worked on 2 goat farms) they will eat anything :-\  they will even eat ragwort (though i wouldnt feed it intentionally)
i know it isnt your responsibility, but electric fencing is probably your best bet.
it doesnt come cheap though :(
if they ever have been kept inside an electric fence, you could probably get away with some of the wire without the rest of the set up, or perhaps even white string?
once they have been zapped, a goat will rarely forget an unpleasant experience.
