Sunflower field
« on: February 18, 2007, 05:14:48 »
..well, it isn't a field i want! But, last year on my allotment site someone grew an area of sunflowers, approx 40 of them.  They looked stunning.  They were about 5-6 foot tall and their heads smiled at the sun, dawn to dusk.
I would like to do this, but having looked at seeds, have only found the tall varieties or multi flowered.  Although, these are lovely, the single stemmed, yellow ones are the one i am after.
Can anyone tell me which ones i should be using for this project?

In a field situation most of the Giant tall won't get much above 7' in the UK... we save our own seed though!

Hiya,

Try Russian Giant... claims to grow single flower on stalk from 9-14 foot high!!!
Ive just sown about 40 with my little boy... hopefully at least 50% will germinate and I can have a row growing up on side of the plot!  ;D

They are really beautiful flowers - sort of sum up summer.  I am going to try & grow some shorter ones in my new cut flower bed.

We grew a bed of smaller cutting Sunflowers, they were great but cross pollinated with our "Giant" strain... this year they were very variable in height, but had lots of side stems to keep the flowering season going!
