If you're soil is in a reasonable state, yes. Sooner the better; you haven't got too much time now, as it needs a cold spell or the bulbs won't clove.

:) hi Mrs t,

my garlic ,shallots and rest of onions went in on Monday, snuggled in sand to help with drainage. we have had hard frosts every night since then, and now heavy rain,

i believe you can plant garlic until march, but today would be great :) good luck /shades x

Is it true about garlics needing a cold spell cos last years crop was a bit weedy - they went out in March but I thought it was because of the really hot and dry weather that we had... I didn't want to hoe around them incase I decapitated a few so I ended up leaving them in ground that ended up like dusty concrete... Can't win  :'(

For the garlic to divide and produce a bulb of multiple cloves, it requires a minimum of a week at below 8 degrees - ideally 2 weeks at below 4 degrees for the best yeild.

It is advisable to 'dress' the garlic during mid-March with chicken poo pellets to help increase the sulphur content.
