Spect I am barking up the wrong tree, so please put me straight if you can!

Could we please have a close-up of the flower and the leaf, and an indication of its height?

Looks a bit more than 4 - 6 inches in height, though traceym. Be easier if we knew just how tall it is.

Hi Sally
I have dwarf penstemons about 12ins, but the flowers in your photo don't look tubular. Looks more like a phlox flower to me too. I believe there is a wild form which has singular flowers instead of the usual large cluster.  :-\

It is one of the species, Diane, but there are a lot of wild ones out there in the USA (and 1 in Siberia).
