Been um-ming and arring about raised beds. She said crop ratio is increased but downside is that raised beds need more watering. In this drought spells we keep having maybe its not such a good idea.  ???

<brace for rant> 8)

Our deep beds (no edges) were heavily mulched last summer but NOT watered. So-called 'thirsty' crops like beans, toms, lettuce and spuds cropped well through the drought and beyond, and the soil was always moist enough to plant into under the mulch. Deep beds don't 'need' more watering - less if anything, because if mulched, the undug, untrodden soil structure holds water better, like a sponge!

sorry to rant but I hope the programme explains 'raised beds need more watering' in a little more detail ::)

what was the different way to sow carrots kaytee?

i agree with everything you said, our raised bed only needed watering for crops like lettuce, celeriac, peas when podding up, less when we'd mulched, and only when it was very dry, 'did that ever happen or was it a dream ?'
also, as ours are boarded up, with a piece of wood in the corner, i can actually sit and weed  ;D

If there was a phone in you could give her a run for her money.... put her on the spot.

I will llisten closely to see if she expands on her comments on the clip.

Erm it's a sort of 'I would really like to see the programme but it it an awful lot of trouble to put you to for one programme so I can't really expect you to do it but it's ever so kind of you to offer cos I wouldn't even know where to start putting it on a CD and as long as everyone on this site talks about what was in the programme I can probably sort of get the gist'  ................................. if you see what I mean!!!

The main thing that makes "raised beds" raised - is all the compost added over the years .......which gradually means the soil retains more moisture and needs less watering .  But I have no supports round mine as they make perfect homes for the slugs and all their mates....

:)

big article on this programme in the new issue of kitchen garden.

carol presents the prog from her home in Devon but draws on experience from RHS gardens in Devon and Yorkshire.

The people in the series are mainly first time growers, in many cases they've never grown anything before.

wonder if we will learn anything :P /.shades x
