Homemade soap! Has anyone tried making it ?
« on: October 26, 2006, 14:21:42 »
Has anybody out there tried making soap? Christmas this year is on a very limited budget, so most pressies will be homemade. I have seen somewhere that you can make  lovely soaps using lots of garden herbs etc.  I have a couple of friends that would really love some garden soap.  Any ideas anyone????????????

Hi,

I haven't made any yet but this site certainly looks interesting...

http://thesoapkitchen.co.uk/

I don't know if it is any help but does seem to have quite a bit of information.

Oh that'll teach me a lesson in reading thread titles more carefully.

I thought you'd written "Homemade soup! Has anyone tried making it?"  Was looking forward to reading soupy recipes...  :-[  :-[   :-[

Conker, I read it the same!!  ::)

The children and I are going to melt down some coloured glycerine soap in a bain marie like you would choccy, and then carefully pour it into different shaped moulds, waiting til the first layer cools, then adding another layer and so on to make pretty little soaps.  They are then going to wrap them in different colour tissue paper and give to the lady rellies for Christmas.  We also make home made chocs, jams, bath salts, sloe gin etc to give to rellies - the expect it now!!

What a clever lil bunny you are EJ!

I'm quite lucky really I only have a few rellies to buy for so that cuts down my Christmas budget!

Oh we don't do many, and set challenges like gifts for a fiver, but the children like to give the ladies (nans, great nans, aunties) a little pressie of their own making, and these are perfect!  ;D

I can recommend the soap kitchen, that's where I buy all my soapmaking stuff from. EJ, I've done the melt and pour soaps too, it's a much safer way of making soap if you want to involve the children.  If you use the clear glycerene soap you can imbed pressed flowers, dried herbs and other fillers. S put a little rubber spider into his bar of soap ;D

don't know whether you're still looking for something to do with soap but I've just come across the soap center, loads and loads of recipes, really got me hooked, went on to google and put in coconut palm soap granules as I don't like the idea of lye, and it came up  :)

If you add some clay face masque and oatmeal makes a lovely cleansing soap for gardeners hands.
