Mushroom ID please?
« on: October 10, 2006, 15:38:37 »
I'm 99% sure this is a shaggy parasol, but are there any experts here? The cap's about 6 inches wide, white gills, spore print white, bruises reddish.. found a big clump growing on a compost pile. Is there anything this could be confused with?

Sadly these were a bit far gone, but there were lots of babies nearby - how quickly will these turn into worthwhile food?

Ta for any advice :)

It looks very much like the Shaggy Parasol, Lepiota rhacodes.

Could be Parasol mushroom, Lepiota procera. What is the stem like?
Parasol mushroom's stem has a felty covering, which can look like snake-like markings.

Parasol mushroom and shaggy parasol are both edible, but shaggy parasol can cause gastric upsets in some people.

Ta for the advice. Yeah, think it's a Shaggy one, not a Parasol, sadly. And given the apocalyptic weather today, I can't see me going back to see if the babies are ready yet!
