Sweet Orange
« on: April 06, 2004, 13:37:45 »
I was watching ebay the other week, and was amazed to see someone pay £6 for 'sweet orange' seeds.  No variety was stated.  I looked up sweet orange and found that this is the name for most of the eating oranges.  Surely, they could have just bought a couple of oranges from tesco and saved the pips.  I remember growing pips as a child.  Would oranges grown from pips eventually bear fruit or do you need to buy special seeds ?

No.
The only issue would be whether the orange was picked before the seed was viable. I have bought grapefruit with germinated seed growing in it (about an inch of root). Potted them up, grew them for a couple of years. Not a plant I regard as inherently attractice, constant battle with aphids and very slow growing for me. Dumped them as a result.
