I believe that some folk are plagued with foxes?
And some use chicken pellet fertiliser? Which foxes love!
I see that MarkHix - restaurateur - puts chilli powder on the pellets.

Doh! Never occurred to me, how could I be so stupid? Little devils are busy digging up my onions for me at the moment!

Colin Bellamy Woods, who kept a pet shop for years, also told us to put chilli powder in with peanuts for the birds - no harm to the birds, but squirrels loathe it.
(wish Colin would come back I miss him)

Since I became lactose intolerant OH only buys plain crisps... the boys have rebelled and added dried chilli to crisp packets, like the old blue bag salt.. so it doesn't work on all pests, but has used up a two year backlog of chilli powder!
