Oh my poor sweetcorn!
« on: July 25, 2006, 00:16:15 »
I was so proud of my strong sweetcorn plants. Very early, vigorous plants and what  do I find today but small thin green caterpillars have eaten most of the silks from many of the cobs >:(. I opened up several and found the blighters nestled on the top of the cobs chewing away at the silks. On one cob there is absolutely no silk left, chewed off right down to the cob itself. They all came to a speedy end that's for sure, but what are they? Is this something to watch out for next year?

I fear most of the cobs won't mature - they are not filling out well at all :(. Is it worth leaving them any longer?

Poor Tricia!  Earwigs are the usual nuisance.

If the silks have gone before the pollen has fallen, I would say no hope.
