Overwinter?
« on: July 08, 2006, 14:24:47 »
My newish allotment is doing fine, and I have even been able to open up some more beds. I would like to try some "overwintering" -but have no idea what I can use and when and how. Does anyone have any suggestions/experience or links to share.

Do you already have parsnips, jerusalem artichoke etc. growing?
Some ideas for sowing and planting now and next month, to overwinter and eat fresh from the plot :D

Allium   Onion Cipolla Rossa Savonese (Franchi)
Allium       Stuttgart Giant
Allium   Onion Senshyu Yellow (Japanese) (OGC)
Allium   Winter White Bunching Onion
Allium   Leek Yates Empire
Brassica   Cabbage Wheelers Imperial
Brassica   Cabbage Wintergreen
Brassica   Choy Sum, purple Flowering
Brassica   Kale, Red Russian
Brassica   Broccoli, Purple Sprouting
Brassica   Broccoli, White Sprouting
Brassica   Cabbage January King
GM   Clover, crimson (Trifolium incarnetum)
GM   Phacelia
Greens   Swiss Chard (Leaf Beet) (OGC)
Greens   Spinach Beet Verde da Taglio
Greens   Spinach Bordeaux
Greens   Spinach Riccio d’Asti
Greens   Komatsuna (Mustard Spinach)
Greens   Mizuna
Root         Salsify a Fior Blu (Franchi)
Salad   Lettuce Rouge d'Hiver (OGC)
Salad   Lettuce Winter Density (OGC)
Salad   Chicory, Red 'Late Rossa di Chioggia'
Salad   Radiccio, Mixed (Franchi)

Tips:
Cover with mesh tunnel - prevents splashes from rain, and pests
Use straw as a mulch around root crops so you can harvest them in frost
Mulch the paths to prevent boggy boots!

If you have room, green manure (GM) rather than bare soil for overwintering.

Good book?
Elliot Coleman's 'Four Season Harvest'!

try www.realseeds.co.uk, I've just placed an order today for stuff to plant now and for winter.  I found things suitable in the 'more salad vegetables', 'dual-use', 'mustard greens', 'cabbage & sprouts', 'Chard, Spinach & greens for cooking' sections if thats any help, and what's nice about the site is that they do some quite unusual things that sound really nice to grow.
