The "Fartichoke" appelation is because they make pentose not sucrose... which we can't digest but our gut flora love! The afeodesta (?) is supposed to break it down...
Makes great soup and ragout with mussels!

cutting the rest down to stumps today, came across something new - one of the stalks lying on the ground had grown a nice tuber from the leaf joint in the mulch. clever so and sos! ::) so I guess you could grow one plant in the middle of a bed and layer it if you wanted to?

One of the old boys on our site said "the problem's not growing 'em , it's getting rid of 'em" ;)

I would second that (except I like mine - 2 varieties, a red and a white) and as a caution if you put the peelings on the compost make sure that compost is well rotted before you use it cos any little piece of JA peeling will take root and shoot and take over  >:(

I agree with you both, Barnowl and Calendula... they grow from the tiniest bits, my worst nightmare would be a GM cross between bindweed and JA's
