Topic: Debris netting and carrot fly

Is debris netting effective at keeping out the carrot fly?
Someone told me not to use it as the holes were too big to keep them out..

I use enviromesh for my carrots, but debris netting for pretty much everything else.  If you look at how debris netting is woven (I know, it's sad that I have) the threads cross over each other.  Whilst not a tightly woven as enviromesh, I think it would deffo slow them down if nothing else.

They may be referring to the securing holes down the middle, these should probably be sewn up (fishing line?) for carrots.  :)

The Debris netting I have from Ebay, only has eyelets at each end, there isn't another row running through the middle.

Why not plant Chives between your carrot rows which help to keep carrot fly at bay, :)

Cheers All! Going to try some proper mesh and use the debris hetting for brassicas..
Does the chives thing really work?  Carrot fly is present in epidemic porportions on our plot..

   They seemed to work for me, so I'm going to plant Chives again this year between my carrots, :)

we cover our carrots with fleece and keep the debris netting for the brassicas  ;D

Enviromesh or similar is the only way to stop this pest. if planting chives / onions worked, there wouldn't be any mesh / netting on the market!!
I've seen hundreds of acres of carrots covered with fleece / mesh in Norfolk, if the farmers could get away with companion planting, don't you think they would do it,?  it is a lot cheaper than purchasing / installing / removing protective covers   ;)

Well I like a few chives so I'll give the mesh a go and plant some chives.  Worst case - I get some chives (and hopefully some carrots!)

No it isn't... it'd be a nightmare to harvest and only half your crop would be carrots..... remember the farmers put them in with machines (so you'd need a split-driller for sowing) and takes em out with machines (so either a specially adapted harvester or do it by hand).......

I plant between onions and chives myself, though I ferqunetly put fleece over them too......
