when is elephant garlic ready?
« on: June 20, 2006, 12:55:50 »
I planted 20 or so cloves before christmas - they are now around 5ft tall, with seed heads forming. the bulbs are forming below ground, and so I don't want to waste any looking before they might be ready...

Any ideas?
The problem with being an IT teacher is that all those kids get in the way of my interaction with the computers.

We have a few, removed the flower slalk as soon as visible so bulbs will grow more.Says in the blurb that came with them harvest mid June to early July. Taking ours up soon as it has so far managed to steer clear of the white rot!!

The bulb is supposed to get about 20% larger if you take off the flower buds. According to the bumph I had from the Garlc Farm, it should be ready between mid-June and early July, so it shouldn't be long, but it's a late season so it could be a couple of weeks yet. I'm planning to lift mine as soon as the stems start to keel over.

Mine went out late so I am expecting to take mine out with the shallots and summer onions, which may be sooner than normal as the overwintered ones never really got going it was so dry!
