Topic: yellowing tomatoes

one or two of the tomato plants we put in have been turning yellow. it seems to be indiscriminate across varieties and on some plants its just the lower parts with one plant looking yellow all over and perhaps dwarfed. nevertheless that one is flowering heavily

any ideas?

Lower leaves yellowing is normal and they can be removed, over all yellowing may be a sign of a virus or a lack of nitrogen.

One of my squash was yellowing in the g'house, checked and there was no drainage in the bag, so it was full of liquid. Slashed a hole in the side and foul smelling water gushed over my sandals, but the squash is looking a lot better :-X

hmm, i didnt think drainage was a problem in that area. we grew a cucumber there last year and it was quite happy. will try fertilizer though - tomato one ok or should i go for a nitrogen/green plants one instead at this stage?

the reason i say this is because the all over yellow-ish tomato is planted on the border which adjoines the pavement. they may well have salted in the winter, and any water would have run off into that bed.

nothing much i can do about that, but i will try the nitrogen

I would give it a high nitrogen blast, something like miracle grow or chicken manure pellets. The tomato feeds are higher in postash and not so much nitrogen.

Dont over do it though, one feed should be enough, too much lush growth cuts down on flowering.

have given some rocket fuel to the tomato in question - provided by my friendly lottie neighbour. homemade pong in a watering can! the tomato is now turning a darker shade of green, so it seems to have done the trick. will do the same again in a few days time and then it will be over to tomato feed for the fruit :)
