Withdrawl symptoms
« on: June 01, 2006, 18:52:36 »
Hello all.
seems like I've been missing weeks!!

My hard drive crashed :'(
Lesson learnt......Make a back up of all files!!!!!!!!!
lost all  files, photo's, web pages, kids homework..... you name it , i lost it >:(

If anybody else as no back up ...MAKE ONE !!!!!!

just one problems with the new hard drive though i also got a smaller  one to use as the back up . Thing is is my main large one will not boot up as master with a  slave. It will on its own or  as the slave, but not as master. Jumpers are fine,BIOS finds it OK but half way through boot up it just closes and restarts. Any ideas ???

I take it you have installed the operating system on the drive . Sounds like a nasty one . Perhaps putting the slave on a different cable might solve the problem .

Hi Travman
Have you set the small jumper settings which you will find next to the power pins! there will be a diagram on the hard drive to let you know which should be where! i.e master is usually next to the siingle pin and "usually" the slave has NO junper at all! Hope this helps.

p.s just seen your're last line ooops ! u said you've done the jumper settings!!! DOH!!

Bit difficult W/O all info.
You need two drives.
First partitioned to take System/Files. At least 20 gigs.
Second backup for files - 80 gigs?
If you play games, talk to someone else.

All is NOT lost !!!

I had same problem last year.  Took the complete hard drive to the computer shop and they were able to copy all the files on there.  I paid just £35 for the whole thing. Good luck !!

I would have paid £100 if the photos and files could have been recovered of the old drive but it was to damaged. :'(

Thanks Curry - Especially when the CD contains over 3 years of letters, memoranda, etc...

Firstly your initial problem, do you still have your original "damaged" drive. You would be surprised at what can be recovered from a hard drive. How do you know its "to damaged". I managed to recover over 17Gb of data off a hard drive with a very nasty clicking sound that wouldn't boot.
Second problem. Some computers get a bit upset with master / slave configurations and physically where the drive is on the cable i.e. end / middle. My Dell is bad at this so you may want to try setting both drives as "cable select" or "CS" as it's sometimes abbreviated and then going from there.
Having separate hard drives helps. With Microsoft's synctoy (google it) you can easily "mirror" folders across two hard drives on the same computer. Then if one dies you have your important files backed up onto the second one. If thats not an option for people then with a dvd writer costing about £35 and dvd media in the pence range ask yourself how much stuff can you afford to loose.
