2 onion questions
« on: May 29, 2006, 19:19:35 »
1. If the tops of the leaves get eaten (by birds, presumably), does it affect the bulb?

2. The onions I planted in the autumn have grown ok, but quite a few of them are showing at least half the bulb above the surface now. Should I leave them alone or earth them up?

I would think that it would affect the plant if the tops of onions had been broken or eaten ...I think it would depend at what stage of their development this happened as to how much it would affect them..

Don't earth Your onions up ..It is normal for the bulb to appear above ground ..cheers Jim

Don't earth them up it will encourage rots! Usually if the tops of the leaves are damaged it is slugs... sometimes birds pick off the slugs and appear to be damaging the plants!

I accidentally strimmed off the leaves of one of my garlic plants (member of the onion family) and that grew back. So may be there's hope for yours too?
