best compost deals around
« on: May 28, 2006, 22:11:49 »
not sure if this has been covered recently, but tenders please for the cheapest/best value retailers.

recently bought 3 for £10, but soon found they went too quickly (they were only 40 litre bags and not the 80 litres i normally go for.

Im talking multi purpose (for seed sowing and potting)

thanks

Wickes do 4 x 80l bags for £10.  I have used copious amounts as a soil conditioner for the lottie.  I have used it for sowing and was not impressed as in small pots it tends to dry out quickly and it is not easy to re-wet.

Have you tried Homebase?  they have been doing a number of offers..........

i'm just going for B&Q peat free mixed with a bit of sharp sand atm.

if i'd have known how much i was going to get through this season, i'd have ordered a ton of the stuff which much be cheaper in the long run.

i never seem to hit the right place at the right time for deals and it's costing me a small fortune.

know what you mean Mrs KP. We bulk buy it in special offers -e.g. three bags at a time and suddenly I realise I am finishing off the last bag and only half way through the job I am doing....... it soon goes.

Will contact the council, but doubt Bedford CC are doing anything that useful!

glasgow certainly aren't (unless someone wants to tell me otherwise).  i'm guessing they use all our stuff we send in the brown bins for their own beds.

having now pretty much run out of space in my own garden, i'm staking a (temporary) claim on two of next doors beds (which is vacant) so am heading off up to B&Q today for another couple of bag loads.

i've got two darleks but even when they're ready (and they're taking an absolute age), i'll never manage to become 100% self sufficient or even anywhere near !

A number of us have got together on the allotments and we bulk buy our composts and fertlisers etc wholesale.

This year I had 5 x 100 litre bales of Humax multi-purpose and 5 x Humax Potting delivered plus 50 kg each of Fish blood & bone and Growmore.

We also buy boxes of 12 Chempak liquid fertliser mixes and share them out.

On looking at the garden centre prices lately I have found I have saved quite a bit.

Add this saving to that on my seeds I do quite well really.

Here in the south-west  we can get two 75ltr bags for £4.98 from several sources - and from Trago two 80 ltr. sacks cost £4.69, but it costs more in petrol to get there from where I live.
