Rust?
« on: May 21, 2006, 08:59:11 »
Hi guys,

I've been given an abandoned allotment, which hasn't been touched for about 5 years.

On there, there are about 200 raspberry plants.  Most look OK, but some have bright orange spots on the eaves.  The spots are very small, so I'm not sure if this is a form of rust.

Your help would be appreciated

Thanks

It certainly sounds like a fungus; are the spots raised? I don't know what it would be exactly though.

Probably, as long as the spots aren't pinkish and on the stems... the dreaded coral spot! I get rust on all sorts of things but most can weather it out. Any chance of a picture? If the spots get bigger and cause leaf fall or lack of fruit you may need to grub them out.

Are the plants too close together? Damp stagnant air encourages fungus, and if they're too close they may not be getting the light they need.

Thanks for your replies.

It isn't like any other rust that I've seen.  It is slightly raised.

The plants are close together, but it doesn't wipe off like a fungus.  However, the plot is so overgrown, it could be caused by anything.

When it stops raining, I'll get a photo and get it posted,

Cheers

Ruth

Some aphids cause leaves to blister but that is usually on currants, are there any ill currant bushes nearby?
 ???
