open day / plant sale
« on: May 14, 2006, 21:53:52 »
just a reminder, we're having an open day on Saturday the 20th May, from 11a.m. in Budhill / Springboig allotments.  Gartocher Rd. Glasgow. east end.  (next to Gartocher tyres) everyone within travelling distance is more than welcome to come for a nosey, a cuppa, and the opportunity to buy some cheap plants grown by those who know.  free entry, but we'll hound you till you buy a raffle ticket!! all money raised goes towards improving the site,

there's one two doors along from me that's being given up soon. (being on the committees good for some things!) it was cleared, flattened and rotivated last year but it would be a real big challenge for anyone to get it back into shape. i can garentee you'd love your neighbours though. ;)

councils notorious for not updating data. there's 13 on the waiting list!! but there's been 4 allocated in the last 6 months, and another two coming up soon.  some people think having an allotments going to be great fun, and it is, but don't realise how much hard work it can be too. if fruit and veg grow well so do the weeds!! the first years the most difficult, trying to clear ground and plant up all at the same time. i think too many people think they've got to catch up with plots that have been worked for a long time, a near impossible task. as long as its cut back or covered so weeds don't annoy your neighbours it doesn't matter how long, if ever, it takes. it's meant to be enjoyable.

that 30-minute allotment book is rather good in spite of the title and cover, ain't it? 8)

a big thank you to anyone who came. what a riot!! when the gates opened it was like a tidal wave, i've never seen plants go so fast in my life. everyone seemes pleased with the variety, quality and prices, (really cheap), and i'm sure we cleared over £600 profit. thank goodness it's just once a year.
