Thought I'd show you my chooks. Haven't got all of them here yet. Some are a bit camera shy.

Lovely chickens Heldi, they are very pretty.   ;D ;D

What breeds are they?   Is Caramel a Rhode Island Red?

Hello pauline Heldi's OH here , i have her chained to the cooker making the tea

From top to bottom:-

Den is a light sussex
Aeryn is a cuckoo maran
betty and lilly are both bovan nera
the story with toffee is that she could be described as a meadow sweet ranger by other  breeders but really she is a hybrid cant remember what type but seem to remember black rock and rhode island red or some type of maran
tahlulla is a light sussex
zhaan is a blue belle
and last but not least caramel is a brown hen bought at the same time as ginger (who is not shown but is very similar) and  toffee, these two dont look like rangers but i suspect they are from the same sort of background

Thankyou folks!  I know I keep going on and on about it but that cod liver oil really puts a gleam on their feathers  :).  I'm taking some each day myself because I could do with a bit of a shine up hahaha!  Capsule form I'm taking I hasten to add...don't think I could stand it in me rice. Yuk!

I get the impression they are happy. They seen bright and alert so hopefully I'm doing something right. Still learning.  I worry about their feet alot lol! Well it is so darn wet.

Shall try to snap the rest of the troup soon. When the weather clears up and they aren't so scruffy. That pic of Tallulah is quite old aswell, she looks really young in it,she is much bigger now and I think has just come on to lay.

Dennis' hormones have kicked in and he is approaching the girls quite often. He isn't very good though. I saw him go straight over the top and hit his bonce on the floor two or three times yesterday. My son thinks he is playing piggy back !  ;D

Oh heldi that did make me laugh.  From what I can remember when my dad had chickens, some boys just never get the hang of it  ;D
and I just love the name tallulah for a hen :) but for the life of me I can't think which film it reminds me of.  Was it  bugsy malone?

......or Tallulah Bancroft? ::) ;D Bit of a wild one, is she? ;D

I'm loving all the pix and tales of the chooks from you all. I'm working in a client's much nglected garden  and, after a few sessions sawing down trees and cutting back brambles in the 'park' area I finally reached the furthest boundaries a coupla weeks ago......and heard a clucking, chucking and splashing.......joy of joys! Man whose property adjoins has 2 chickens and 2 ducks living in a brill house and covered run with toys ;D There's a plastic yellow duck on the pond and a ball for them to kick around 8)

Ah Jesse,
Your comment reminded me of a posting I had seen on another forum, I've copied it below.

The photo at the end is my back garden, I've got ducks, but you might notice, no lawn.

Tina wrote We have a man-made pond and wondered
if it is possilbe to buy baby duck to
put at the pond,

Wooah Tina... Don't rush into this duck thing.

I have a Peking, its a beautiful white innocent thing that poops in
unbelievable quantities. Never mind about a bio-filter, you are going
to
need a sewerage system suitable for a small town to deal with what this

duck is going to do to your pond.

would they stay or would they leave?

No need to fret on this account - ducks never take the hint. Chuck `em
it in the air and it'll come right back. Sure it will occasionally
wander out onto the highway, but motorists would rather run off the
road
and kill all their passengers than hit a duck that's sitting looking
right at them.

Look closely at the general design of your average duck, notice that
the
cranium is small. It is my belief that if you could take all the duck
brains in the world and combine them in a sort of super organic
computer
you would basically have a machine with a loose bowel and a vocabulary
limited to: "quack". A duck is a natural born lobotomy.

wondering if the cats if the neighborhood would bother them.

Hell no, the neighborhood cats will not bother your duck, unless it is
a
duckling which you have just presented to your young daughter. Actually

you will find the neighborhood cats will avoid close encounters with
anything that looks like a duck. This is partly because cats dislike
stepping in duck doo to get to their prey and partly because the duck
thinks any passing cat must be its mother/sister/brother/mate. Even the

staunchest Tom cat finds it unnerving to have to deal with this sort of

thing and will generally go to extremes to avoid an embarrassing
encounter.

Would we need to
put a fence around it?

Sure, fence your duck, but it wont do you any good. You will still hear

screeching tires on the road and the neighbors will still phone you up
to say your duck is harassing their cat again.

If you do get a duck be sure to turn on the lights at night before your

walk across the lawn. One of the most unforgettable experiences you can

have is tripping over a sleeping duck in the dark.

We tried ducks briefly when I was in Cornwall; they didn't lay so we ate them.

we had ducks for a while two silver appleyards (I think) they harrassed the neighbours, 'beaked' small passing children who dared put there hands through the garden gate and pulled all the washing from the washing line.  We eventually gave them to a couple with a small  holding, they had a very beautiful pond they had just finished landscaping ..

Heldi, please thank your OH for the list of chicken breeds.   :D

Caramel looks very much like two of my chickens who were found straying at the end of our drive.  A neighbour caught them and said they had probably escaped from the poultry truck which had visited the chicken farm to take the older birds away.  Well, they are having a lovely life here with me now.  Last year one of them went broodie and raised some chicks from fertilised eggs that I had bought from the market.  They are such friendly chickens and are the first to greet me when I go into their run.  I have named them Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum.   ;D ;D

The photos show one of the strays with a broodie Welsummers hen and the young chicks that they hatched and raised between them.

Mike your post is so funny!  Was offered some duckings last year but declined to take up the offer, even though I've always wanted to keep a couple.  Don't feel up to the challenge right now  ;D.  I've always hankered after a little white duck.

MM I can't send you a PM because your inbox is full!  Yes there was a Tallulah in Buggsy Malone. I used that name because I had wanted to give my daughter that name but I was unruled...I wonder why??!!  :D
Funnily enough Lishka, she is a feisty wild hen! She is the least one likely to get picked up because she runs about like a loony but she's the first one to investigate any going on and is always hanging around me when I'm sat down.

Pauline. Your little brown hen could be Caramel and Ginger's sister. They do look so alike don't they.  I wasn't with OH when he went to pick them up. I can't remember what breed the lady said they were.  I'll get OH to ring her and ask because I'd like to know, out of curiosity.  I wanted little brown hens because they look so traditional don't they.

 I love your pictures,so cute.
