Greenhouse orientation - advice please!
« on: February 03, 2006, 11:42:59 »
I am thinking of getting a greenhouse or polytunnel for my plot. Is there an orientation that anyone would recommend, or siting bloopers to avoid please? :P

Ridge normally is reckoned to be best running North South, so both sides get equal sunshine. Try to avoid anywhere where the wind is likely to create a vortex. We have had to remove the glass from the doors at both ends of the g/house near the house because the wind whips round the corner of the house and swirls. It once lifted the whole structure off its foundations, ripping the screws out of the wooden base!.
Near to water supply is sensible and electricity if possible.
Gardening is the great leveller.

Oh, well, silly me - and NO argument Eric - I put both ours in E/W, assuming that most light came from the SE, S & SW.

We live & learn!

Thank you eric, glad I asked. Will ask my neighbours if they have experienced whirlwinds. Any thoughts on making a greenhouse or polytunnel unattractive/invisible to vandals welcome   :-\
