Hi Tim, Are leeks also in the allium family?? If it looks like the garlic and onions are heading to a mouldy white death I'd like to use the bed for something else later on, leeks being top choice.

[EDIT] A quick web search turned up the answer - yes leeks are part of the allium family.... looks like they're doomed!

I think once the spring weather is really here they'll bounce back. They want to live for ***** sake!!!! ;)

Calm down! We dont want that kind of language here thank you.

You are right though a bit of spring warmth is all most plants need to get going. My garlic have positively shot up in the last few days.

Changing the subject......??

Looking good so far? Although the Elephant's not too happy.

But not much different (from Nov & Jan plantings) to those planted 1 March - page 8.

Hey! I wasn't complaining.. just observing! Your garlic looks fine and healthy. Makes me think I should start making hay while the sun shines and get to the lottie.

Growing like mad. The top pic is a rather weedy bed of Solent Wight; the bottom is a row of Albigensian Wight on the right, elephant garlic in the middle, and Eschalotte Grise shallots coming through on the left.

I've got two lots in modules, one inside my greenhouse (unheated) and one outside in a coldframe with a broken lid (some protection but not much!) and the latter is doing better than the former, so it must be true that they like the cold. Now I'm wondering at what stage it's best to plant them out on to the allotment. The shoots are 1-2" high at the moment. Also, will they need much hardening off?

Mine, purple solent or something along those lines.  I find the purple stands up to the white rot much better.  Used the last of last years yesterday when making spag bol.  Can't beat home grown!  ;D

I went down to the allotment this morning to discover great big footprints all over my garlic bed!  >:(  There doesn't seem to be too much damage, a few cloves were out of place and exposed but easily earthed back over.  Apart from that they are doing well!  Planted at the end of Feb and some 3 inches high now.

That's infuriating, but as long as nothing was taken or damaged, that's the main thing.
