yet another chicken question
« on: January 17, 2006, 21:00:52 »
I would like to get some more chickens but was told by someone that if the new birds have been vaccinated,  my chickens (which hav'nt) would probably die. Can anyone substantiate this..I'm a bit confused. Thank you.

I have never heard this to be honest.

I would be happy to introduce new birds as if they are vacinated they should not be bringing in anything with them.

I think they would be OK.

If bird flue arrives in this country Defra are likely to either cull all birds, or insist on them being in a covered pen with no access to wild birds.

I think the Defrs web site has lots on this but I have not studied it myself.

not necessarily talking about bird flu....all the other things they get vaccinated for ie: salmonella etc.

agapanthus I've never heard of there being a problem but I'm fairly new to chickens so it is possible I guess if the birds are recently vaccinated. I know someone who will most likely know the answer to your question...MrsL at the forum you've recently joined. :)

Hi Agapanthus

Poultry flocks can be vaccinated against salmonella, Newcstle disease, Infectious bronchitis and Mareks disease, amongst others.

The breeder should know what the parent flock has been vaccinated against.  Most hybrid flocks are vaccinated against the first three.  Breeders of Silkies will often have also vaccinated against Mareks.

If the young have not been vaccinated it does not mean that they will die, in fact some breeders recommend not vaccinating to promote natural immunity.  Your local vet should know if there are any diseases prevalent in your area.
