Cross pollination
« on: January 06, 2006, 04:31:09 »
I wanted to ask if I planted 3 types of tomatoes near each other - cherry toms, roma & beef steak would they have cross pollinated??

I have loads of cherry tomatoes, the roma have come out small & my beaf steaks are only the size of small apricots.

I thought beaf steaks grew bigger ( I did get bigger ones at my last house where I was growing the larger variety of tomatoes).

Cross pollination would only be an issue if you want to raise plants from the seed of this years crop.

The size of the crop would more likely be dictated by cultural issues. Feeding, light levels, water regime, days to harvest depending on variety, etc.

Thanks Jerry.  Not only is there so much to learn but so much to work out why.

Read your blog, it's great.  You must spend a lot of time on the allotment.  Everything looks healthy & fantastic.

Thanks, not as much time as I would like some times but I love the time there.

Tara

I have had some successes over the 6 months but want to start over as I don't have much land to play with.  There is so much to learn!!

Now I have to decide do I want to clear a bit of my garden (a couple of metres that's all!!) and make it into a raised bed, with the prospect that this area might lose the sun completely when we add a closed patio in the future???

Or do I start strips of vege patches alongside my shrubs along the fenceline of my block??  Would that be silly?

Any advice anyone?

Many thanks indeed!

The answer is a bit like the one to how long is a piece of string. Though I have only had the plots for a couple of seasons I have gardened since I was a kid and had a great teacher in my father.

I simply enjoy the work and challenge and like things neat.
