Topic: Net curtains - following on from fruit protection.

Our local charity shops are full of these - and I'm thinking of ideas - let me know if you think these would/wouldnt work.
1. as anti-carrot fly mesh if stapled to wood corner pieces (I don't know how big carrot flies are though so I don't know if they'd get through the mesh
2. temporary shading for greenhouse - not that i've got one yet?
3. bag to hang manure/comfrey in barrel of water
4. mesh to cover water barrel to stop leaves etc. falling in and lessening evaporation without stopping water getting in
5. cheap fleece (or am I just being a bit too cheap?)
Any more?

Think this is a very good idea Ceri.  Saw our next door Lottie neighbour using Net Curtains to protect his raspberries last year so we copied and it seemed very effective. Other tips useful too.  Nearly everybody has old net curtains they don't want and you can pick them up very cheaply in Charity Shops as you mentioned.  :)  busy_lizzie

Hi Ceri,
1, carrot fly no idea but plant onion family next to carrots,

2, Yes that works lovely I use it.

3, cannot see why not strong enough dont over do the manure bucket full should be fine.

4 Tied around downpipe should work.

5. If used double should work cheeper than fleece,
what you save you can spend more on seeds and plants, or buy a load of manure for next year.


and dont forget the shed window you dont want everybody to see what is in the shed.

Thanks Theresa - pretty shed windows would require a shed - which I haven't persuaded anyone to buy me yet!!  It was on my Christmas list AGAIN - but as I got a shed for the garden last year I was pushing it a bit.

look in your local papers, free papers, sometimes you see them going cheep or free. good luck

I use old nets to shade the greenhouse - but it does cut out a lot of light, so beware that whatever you are growing do not get leggy.  Same comment would apply fo protection of any other crop.  Seems to fit nicely between the flimsiness of fleece at the weight of enviromesh!
