Topic: Advice for new Allotment holders...?

I thought it might be helpful for new plot holders if there was a Top Tips page for them - I suspect there aren't many of us who manage to take over a pristine plot!

Top of my (no chemical) list and in no particular order of priority would be:
- set small and achievable targets for each visit...that way you feel in control
- dig little and often - it'll be an impossible and backbreaking task otherwise
- every time you dig, dormant weed seeds are exposed to light and water, so either:
       densely plant a robust crop that can beat the weed seeds
       sow a long lasting green manure (like lupins or alfalfa)
       cover the soil (with cardboard, black plastic, old carpet).
Otherwise, after the first drop of rain your nicly cleared soil will be overgrown again!  Most disheartening!!
- Be sure you've got a spot where you can sit a while...
- say hello to your neighbouring plot holders - they are likely to have a wealth of information about the site!

What are your suggestions?  I suspect there are not-new-plotholders amongst us who will benefit from the advice - especially me!

I think (as a person who hasnt quite got a plot yet) a top tips for newbies bit is a fantastic suggestion!

I get started on mine when the council are ready (yes, I am sitting comfortably!)  and can't wait.  I'll definately take a little chair and a flask...can you think of any other essentials for a first trip?

Hi Angela,

A camera? yes so you can keep an album of the lottie from day one.
Pen and paper so you can make a note of the plants that are allready there.
but most of all have fun and enjoy it.

Gloves!  You never know what is growing, and altho I hate wearing gloves, nothing worse that grabbing a handful of stinging nettles, broken glass or brambles!

Rose tinted spectacles, so that when you're looking at a jungle of brambles, nettles and bindweed, all you see is the potential, loverly beds, nice veggies growing happily, an on suite toilet, and a bar.

Never think about what you have to do, always think about how it will be when it's done.

Only thing that keeps me going  :D

And never never forget the little bit at a time rule....

A vision - thats what new lottie holders need. ive had two now and i tried to do it as fast as i could. i have learnt my lesson. bit by bit slowly slowly and you will get there in no time at all. also if you have children as we have plant only what you are going to eat no point growing something that's going to go to waste.
Most of all though enjoy it.
