Camera Picture card
« on: November 15, 2005, 14:23:02 »
Have just bought a new camera for daughter to take away (half price!!) The memory on it is rubbish, only holding 16 pictures so am presuming I need to buy it a memory card. I haven't a clue what I am looking for, but does anyone know how many photos a 128mb card would hold over say a 64 mb? (am asuming double but how many do they hold??)  And yes trying to do it on the cheap as per rotten usual otherwise I just would have gotten a 1GB and be done with it! ;D

Hi DP - I have a 64mb memory card which holds roughly 80 6 x 4 photos.  Daughter however has just bought a new digi camera and a 128mb card and, depending on which size photo setting you want, holds about 110 6 x 4 photos.  Hope this helps a little.

I've bought memory cards on ebay in the past and found them much cheaper than the shops. I also use http://www.7dayshop.com/ they have a very good delivery service and based in Guernsey you don't pay VAT. I bought a rucksack camera bag from them last week that was in Jessops camera shop for over £50 I paid 7dayshop £18.

You need to know the size of your individual pictures. If you are using a fairly new camera on maximum resolution, ie highest quality, then you will typically get picture sizes of about 1MB, perhaps a bit more, or a bit less. Therefore you would expect 64 pictures off a 64MB card, plus the existing memory in the camera. Pro rata for 128MB card etc. If you are only after lower resolution pictures, ie for postcard size printing or uploading onto computer, then you will be more than happy with image sizes of less than 250MB, which will increase your capacity fourfold.

I hope this helps ...

I have a 4 megapixel camera, and get 77 shots from a 64MB card.

I get mine mail-order from http://www.mx2.co.uk/prodpage.asp?type=sub&sub=DIG as they're miles cheaper than the shops. Quick delivery too.

Thank you all for that, interestingly the 2 sites list the 256mb at the same price!
That should keep her quiet for the 10 days!

What's the resolution? You might be better off with a bigger card.

Thanks for this thread. We tried to get a new SD card a few weeks ago and the place we ordered from was useless.  Cancelled the transaction.

Oddly, the two makes on the two sites are Sandisk and Integral.  I have one of each of their CF cards, and the difference in write speed is incredible.  Sandisk wins every time even though they predated so-called fast cards so ought to have been similar.

I have sent the links to His Nibs so he can finish getting me my birthday pressie :)

Postscript to this thread: Just got my new SD card.
We went with 7dayshop as I wanted a Sandisk, and ordered the cheapest 1GB card (listed as £46 at the time).

What I got was a receipt stamped FREE UPGRADE and the new Ultra II plus USB card, which Jessops online is selling at a whopping £119.99 !

**thankyou** Crash for this recommendation...

happy moonbells (won't have to take laptop on holiday now!)
