nesting??
« on: December 23, 2005, 15:06:04 »
During the last 48 hours I have watched frantic activity in our nest box up our weeping willow tree.  Blue t*ts in and out and squabbling, then to join the fun, sparrows, or at least they looked like sparrows, that browny colour but with very definate white stripes along their wings.  They couldn't possibly be nesting..........could they?

I couldn't see the picture but your description of sparrow-like birds with a white stripe along their wings makes me think they could be female chaffinches.  Birds do use nestboxes to sleep in at night so maybe they were fighting for a bed!  Seriously though, whoever wins will claim it as their territory and highly likely to rear their young in it when it warms up a bit.

I've noticed sparrows for a couple of weeks now with nesting material in their beaks, just dismissed it as something they do but seeing your post makes me wonder if somewhere they are building nests.

Carol.. ;D ;D a farmer lambing indoors?...made me chuckle, did he call the vet or midwife?

Ditto here in North Belgium regarding sparrows carrying 'nesting' material.
