Xmas Potatoes
« on: September 23, 2005, 14:10:32 »
First time growing potatoes, I've planted 6 seed potatoes I got from Thompson & Morgan into 2 large plastic bins (3 potatoes in each). In both bins, two of the potatoes have grown massively and are already coming out of the bins, but one potato in each bin has sprouted but have just decided that they'd had enough and won't grow any taller :( I'd say they're probably 2 or 3 inches tall.

My problem now is that I need to keep filling the bins with compost but if I do that, I'll completely cover and kill off the two tiny plants.

What should I do? remove the two poolry growing seedlings so I can cover the vigorous plants with more compost, or give them a chance to catch up? They really don't seem to be growing at all ???

You can completely cover the foliage of spuds, your'e meant too as it keeps the spuds from going green and becoming inedible. Just plonk your compost over the foliage and it will grow through, and you can keep topping them up  :)

I wouldn't worry about the tiny ones.  They'll either catch up or fizzle
I came, I saw, I composted
