how far do you have to go?
«

Grumpily walking home, missing my bike, I felt hard done to have a five minute stroll (although I was lugging a large tool collection) I have gathered that some of you have to make heroic journeys to and fro from your site. I used to have a lottie that was a 45 minute walk - although still only 10 mins by bike - and gratefully swapped for my present one. I really struggled to keep up with everything so respect to all those who have to pack maps and Mars Bars to attempt the slog.

- my heart bleeds!
In the olden days we had to go 1/4 mile to the 2 lotties on the village patch. We carted water in a 50 gal tank in the '51 L/Rover. We didn't stay to enjoy the mains water that we fought for.
Now, it's 60' this way - or 60' that way - even that seems a plod at times!! Especially when lugging a heavy cultivator. - Tim

heavy cultivator -yep, I have one of them too - luckily mine has legs. Brand name - The Husband - easily manoeuvred but prone to excess engine noise. Won't start from cold and needs regular maintenance. Stays sharp but sometimes gets stuck in a rut. On the whole though, a good model - recommended.

Hi, We don't have a car but fortunately we only have to walk 7 minutes to get there. Still seems an awfully long way when you are carrying a heavy pallet. busy_lizzie

Or bits of wood, various gardening tools, bag of straw, step ladders, even a water butt (found in the Skip) or wheeling my wheelbarrow, Legless, I have no shame! So anytime your driving down Monkseaton Drive and see me, give me a toot ;D busy_lizzie

15 to 20 minutes by bicycle, depending on the wind. Don't own a car by choice and miss it only every now and then but not enough to have one.

- all this talk of 'no cars'.
Strange, these days, when so many families have two? With nowhere to park , except across someone else's driveway?
Yes, I did buy one in my younger days for £37.10s - a Wolseley Hornet - but after we were married, late 40s, I cycled 12 miles to work each day - in uniform!! - until - when I was 31 - we paid £100 for a Marendaz Special - which we eventually paid someone £5 to take away.
If only we could get a good bus service? And bicycles are WONDERFUL! But, yes, we do have a car. And, at our age, in the country, it's quite useful? - Tim

A 10-minute walk uphill to the plot - just right for pushing the laden barrow back home. Yup, I'm another one who's given up on the car!
Great views over Leeds city at sunset too!
All best - Gavin
Give you a laugh (and the neighbours)? Youngest daughter is just about to outgrow the bicycle "trailer", so I may just convert it to carry tools and the like.

Mine is only 15 minutes walk away, but the same to drive to! How confusing is that!!
Because... there is a gate at the bottom of the allotments that is next to mine... but to drive to it you have to go ALL the way round the top and drive down again!
Oh well it's good exercise

Ours is about a 10minute drive. It is in the next village and down a couple of very bumpy country lanes. Being a lazy minx, I wouldn't walk it, no pavements for a start! (any excuse is a good excuse ;D)

Mine's 5 mins away on foot and 5 mins away by car - if you include the time it takes to get it out of the garage ;)
we only take the car if we've got lots to carry... we've been taking down loads of paving slabs to make paths - removed them from the back garden earlier this year to create more green space. Honestly, the garden we inherited with our new house was about 60% patio with a square of lawn and nothing else!!! fantastic blank canvas though ;D

Mine is a 5 min drive, probably 45 mins walk-.. which is not going to happen seeing as I have no shed and need to take all my tools each time.

I have to walk at the moment (carrying all tools) as our car got smooshed on the M1 at the weekend! :'( :'(
Oh well only the car got smooshed and no people - and it means I have to do some exercise ::)

Well, another one where it's a 2 minute walk and a 10 minute drive (footpath through houses vs drive right round neighbourhood). But... if I could make a very big jump out of the window of our first floor flat could be there in seconds - much to the boredom of guests I can actually see my plot out of the living room window!
