Topic: What flowers???

Know absolutely nothing about flowers I'm afraid but thought I might grow some down the lottie to put in a vase at home.  Can anyone recommend anything for me to start with.  I like quite plain flowers like lilies and roses - certainly nothing blousy.

Any help greatly appreciated  ;D

 :) Hi,
This is a hard time of year to start planting. Soooo. Before you plant prepare your soil well. Dig in plenty of well rotted organic matter if making newborders to help with water retension as well as goodness. This is especially important if you want to grow things like Roses & LIlies.
You don't say what soil type you have,north, south, exposed etc. Why not try googling. decide whether it is a dry shaded, hot sunny or whatever position, then ask it for plants for those areas. Oh & I would put "uk" to start with too.

Flowers for the good of the lottie:
Marigolds, Rosemary, Nasturtiums, Thyme

Plants for scent: Honeysuckle, Lavender

Flowers for cutting for home:
Lilies, Dahlias, Pinks, Asters, Daffodils,

Flowers for fun:
Winter-flowering pansies (we're sowing the seeds this weekend for this year)

Flowers 'cause I like them and aren't allowed them at home: wallflowers,

Also Buddleias for butterflies and for cutting as pea/ bean sticks etc
Chaenomeles Japonica for flowers and for quinces (for quince jelly)

As you can see I try to get everything to do at least two jobs though that's easier for me as I'm trying for a Leisure Garden not just a lottie.

This year I grew sweetpeas, cosmos, dahlias, cornflowers, gladioli, lilies, sunflowers. Next year I plan to also include daffodils, lots more sunflowers, rudbeckia and alliums. :)

 ;D  I did the opposite and dug up the inherited dahlias for the front garden!    Left teh wallflowers and planted nasturstiums for alternative caterpillar fodder - but they still preferred the parsnips  :-\
