Cold or what!
« on: December 15, 2003, 00:53:30 »
Well, took the old man and the sprogs to the plot this morning and bbbbrrrrrr was it cold!  :o  Haven't been up for about 10 days so was very pleasantly suprised to see everything looking so good.  :) The broad beans are growing really well, even after such a cold spell and the garlics and onions have made strong growth.  Nothing showing yet from the shallots I realized - will have to keep an eye on them :-/ .  The apple trees and fruit bushes are covered in big fat juicy buds.  Only saw one other person there, picking sprouts. It was sooooooooo cold up there!  Anyone else get to their plot today?  Hows things shaping up??   ;D

got in a good three hours -lovely digging. bit nippy tho'.
tried to light a fire in my dustbin but not enough newspaper and the most useless lighter in the world meant no fire and no rollies - had to just fling the spade about.
broad beans looking a bit frosted and temperatures meant to be -3 tonight so popped emergency fleece over till i can get a proper frame made.
garlic, shallots and onions all looking healthy, as are ther strawbs. Actually met 2 other lottiers (have been amazed at how elusive folk are on my site even tho' it has 16 plots, have only met four people.
It was cold tho' - by 4pm, even my collie was moaning to go! Felt supremely virtuous and demanded homage from my family in the form of many cups of tea

Had a peek under the fleece - none of the shallots are showing yet  :( but the Early Wight garlic's well up - the other sorts aren't yet. I've also got over-wintering french spring onions under fleece - again nothing showing. My mint hasn't died back yet and I'm still picking it and I found a strawberry ;D - Lish

didn't make it this weekend (some sort of social whirl hit me) but on friday it was extremely cold, onions and garlic are doing well, cabbages are ok-ish (have some aphid thing that i am trying to deal with) and the broad beans are doing fab.

the bit i cleared loads of weeds from 3 weeks ago hasn't grown any new weeds or grass yet so i have some neat looking bits too!

i am waiting to see if it is going to rain, if it doesn't i'll pop down today and have a dig!

Home today with some sort of flu/stomach virus....yuch! :-/

Went for a stroll down to the lottie yesterday though, just for a breath of air, and it was certainly very cold then! Managed to tidy and dig/manure the whole plot over the past few weeks thank goodness.

Japenese onions are doing well, as is most of the garlic. Even spinach seems to be hanging in there despite being flattened by some fool, sorting out a leek in water piping we have just laid across the site! Thought it was a bit wet underfoot the other week, and was starting to contemplate planting a paddy field that end!

New "clubhouse" arrived last week on our site. i.e. haulage container delivered by council......I think it's to securely store communual in, shame we haven't got any? Being ever resourceful I am sure we will nonetheless put it to good use........

What bit of Essex are you and family in EJ?

... not too bad in London today, lovely and sunny but a bit chilly, normally stroll up to the veggie patch with a ciggie first thing. The sun almost inspired me to dig it all over just for the fun of it!!
Still pulling carrots ( no silly comments,EJ), got some leeks and some red cabbages.
Flower garden is also not suffering from the weather yet.

RR.....me....silly comments....never!   ;D

Markymark, Chelmsford way, a wee village just beyond.  The old man knows your part of Essex, but as I am an interlopper I am still finding my way around.  :)

Note to self.....watch RR at the party and my novelty shaped root veg collection.  :o

So your from Chelmsford way EJ?

Not sure you brave it to Lakeside shopping centre very often, but as I'm only a stones throw away, please feel free to drop by with Ava, sprogs and spades, any help is always welcome! ;D

Did your borough council do the same to you, in issuing eviction noticies last year or are we the chosed few in Thurrock?

What about anyone else?

Cold here too, though started off deceptively bright.  We were up at our lottie yesterday.  Just pottered really.  My husband repaired our shed window which had blown in, and I checked on my Brussel Sprouts, no sign of the dreaded white fly, thankfully, too cold for them also.  Going up next Monday to pick my Christmas Sprouts -  What a great feeling that gives me!  :D
Allotment was lovely, though it was cold and very wet up there, but very quiet and peaceful, just the odd bird scurrying in the bushes, a great antidote for the Christmas bustle.  busy_lizzie
