Ezethas Krombek Blauwschok

have seen the mangetout type pea 'Ezethas Krombek Blauwschok' in the catalogues -looks very nice, but does anyone here had any growing/eating (or even how-to-pronounce!) experience with it

As far as I know 'blauw schokkers' are a type of pea in purple pods. In Holland they are called capucijners and are often dried to save for eating in winter. Capucijners are never called peas here so there must be a real difference. You called them mangetout but aren't mangetout the type of peas you eat with pod and all? I never heard of blauw schokkers being eaten with pod and all. Hope this helps.

they are listed under mangetout which ,yes, means you eat the whole pod. But it does also say that they can be dried.

Yep, that's capucijners. You also asked how to pronounce blauw schokkers, try blaow skhokkers (the kh sound is like clearing your throat).

The traditional way in Holland to eat the dried capucijners in winter (usually bought in tins or jars, they are brown then) is with fried out salt port fat (yuk) over the top of a pile of capucijners on your plate, sprinkled with diced, raw onions and diced pickles and a big dollop of picalily.

You won't hear me bragging about the Dutch kitchen hahaha.

I've only been to Holland 4 times, but have to say I like the Dutch food- except maybe your habit of putting a fried egg on top of everything!

It's always good to hear about unusual crops that people are growing .I have sent for both catalogues mentioned onthese threads.It's interesting to try all the unusual fruit and vege as well as the old favourites.

Oh yuk. Sorry rdak but I never heard of that one, honest and I was born and raised here. I once did see a hamburger served with a fried egg on top, weird. Almost as weird as putting beans on a slice of toast hahaha.  If I were you, I wouldn't put a fried egg on the capucijners thinking it would make it tradionally Dutch, it wouldn't!

I think I mentioned somewhere else that I'm fond of tombstones and ghoulish things? While my o/h used to give visitors the usual Cook's tour of Rome, I'd take them to lesser known places....the Cappucin Cemetary is Not to Be Missed!!! There are these cave-places with skeletons dressed in the brown robes in the niches and you look up and the vaulted ceilings are intricately decorated with patterns of bones :o  ... and some of the patterns aren't quite finished off  :o :o ... and some of the monks around are very very old ;D ;D ;D

I put a fried egg on top of my beans on toast does that make me even weirder ???
