My first attempt was completely wiped out within days by flea-beetle - before decamping over to the radishes! But this time round, blasted the row with a precautionary whif of derris - seems to have sorted it. ;)

I find that the middle of June is plenty early enough for setting swede seed,  and do protect against the flea beetle.

Taken from : http://www.organiccatalog.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=525

Derris is the strongest and longest lasting of the insect sprays that we offer killing caterpillars aphids thrips and sawfly. The active ingredient is rotenone which is taken from a number of tropical plants. Can be used on crops right up to one day before harvest.

Loathe using it, but I am sick to death of loosing crop after crop after crop!  :-\
