Title: First Chillies
Post by: Georgie on May 27, 2005, 21:11:13
Seed sown 15/2 and this year I've remembered to mist the leaves every evening.  Seems to be keeping the red spider mite at bay so far....

Nice. What sort is it? As well as the misting how much water do you give it.

My chilli plant is hairy, but my sweet pepper is smooth - a bit like the one you have Georgie, though not as big.

Thanks for your kind words, everyone.  I have no idea what type it is.  I kept some seed from a bought chilli years ago and potted it up the following February.  Every year since I've kept a few seeds and done the same.  I get about 20-30 chillies off each plant and when fully ripe they turn a glorious deep orange.  I always grow them on the kitchen windowsill, which is warm and sunny, finally potting them on into 5" pots.

It's hard to say how much water I give them, Northerner.  I never let them dry out and from now on they'll probably need watering every day.

my first attempt at growing chillies from seed this year.   good to know about misting.  do you pinch out the top of the plants?

Hi beesknees.  I never pinch out my chillies because I find they branch naturally when they are about 6" tall.  Not sure if that goes for all varieties, mind.

Good luck with yours and remember, if you get a surplus crop they freeze really well, just bung 'em straight into the freezer in a plastic bag.   ;D

Alternatively you can mince them up, then put them in a jar, cover with vinegar, and keep it in the fridge. Then you just take a little whenever you want it.
