Title: Pepper Emergency!!
Post by: Rox on May 27, 2005, 19:40:58
pls help - I can't believe it myself, but it was so hot here today that all my 15 peppers plants and 10 chilis plants got completely scortched and wilted!  :o  :o  I have submerged them in large containers full of water to rehydrate - some of them look slightly better while others (esp. the sweet peppers) are looking terrible!! :-[ Is there any chance of survival, and can I cut off the leaves that are looking completely beyond any redemption?? I am truly very sad - they had just finally started to take off after months of nurturing, and now this happens...  :-[ many thx for any help/advice! :-*

Take 50 lines--I will not forget to water my plants.

Tomorrow will tell, you may be suprised how things recover, but do not let them be waterlogged all night.

Good luck.

Whatever you do don't waterlog them. Peppers wilt and recover very quickly.

thx for help - some plants have survived, but Iäve had to pinch the growing points out on several of the pepper plants as those bits had completely withered and collapsed from the scortching. Is there arepoint keeping these plants and hoping they bush out and somehow bear fruit, or are peppers finshed if the growing point is pinched out? The plants in question are a still very small, i.e., 6-8 inches in height. any advice would be very much appreciated - many thx in advance!  :) btw - a little off topic, but does anyone know how many peppers, on average, a sweert pepper plant normally produces a) on a warm patio in a pot 2) in a pot under glass. thx again!  :D

Pinching out the growing point on peppers to make them bush out + crop better is common practice. It's not ususally done til they're a bit bigger (12' sweet, 9" chilli) but you should be fine.

Yeah, I think you'll be fine.  Mine were is containers that were much too small last year and quite often looked a bit peeky and got scorched/wilted.  I suffer a lot from migraines, so sometimes things do get left unwatered, no matter my good intentions.

They didn't seem to mind too much and the chillies fruited magnificently.  This year they have larger containers (florist buckets that I found in a skip!) and deep drip trays.  Even so, they get the sun from very early in the morning where they are, and I have to be careful!  I try to water just before I go to bed, so they are ready for the sunshine.  ;D

Chillies will cope with harsh treatment! You've taken the best approach .. soak to rehydrate, pinch out any especially damaged bits that don't perk up after a day.

They'll probably try to get their own back on you with extra-hot chillies!

i get about 4 decent bell peppers from each plant but many chillies from each one.
